Shadow is a 1-year-old Labrador Retriever who enrolled in a 2-Week Board and Train with Off Leash K9 Training in Phoenix, Arizona under the care of Shauna. Shadow’s owners had started obedience training, but he was easily distracted and would “forget” commands when anything interesting happened. His program focused on making obedience reliable, improving follow-through, and proofing commands around distractions.
Dog: Shadow
Breed: Labrador Retriever
Age: 1 year
Location: Phoenix, AZ
Program: 2-Week Board and Train
Trainer: Shauna
Main Focus: Obedience reliability, distraction proofing, follow-through, leash manners and heel foundation
Outcome: Stronger obedience foundation, improved focus, and more reliable listening in real-world environments
The Challenge
Shadow had some command knowledge, but it didn’t hold up when distractions showed up.
Before training, Shadow:
- Knew some basic commands
- Became easily distracted and stopped listening
- Would “do what he wants to do” in exciting situations
- Had inconsistent recall and follow-through
- Needed more reliable obedience in real-world environments
His owners wanted obedience that held up beyond the home during walks, outings, and everyday distractions.
The Training Approach
Shadow completed a 2-Week Board and Train designed to strengthen known commands and make them reliable under distraction.
Training focused on:
- Reinforcing core commands (come, sit, down, place, heel)
- Improving follow-through so Shadow responds the first time
- Building engagement so he checks in with the handler
- Distraction proofing in new environments to create real-world reliability
- Strengthening heel and leash manners to improve control on outings
- Teaching structure so Shadow can stay in commands instead of popping out
The goal was to turn “he knows it” into “he does it anywhere.”
The Results
Over the two weeks, Shadow began showing more consistent obedience and better focus.
What improved:
- Better responsiveness to commands even when distracted
- Improved recall reliability and follow-through
- Stronger leash manners and heel foundation
- Better ability to stay engaged instead of scanning
- More reliable obedience in real-life settings
Shadow stayed playful and friendly, now paired with more structure and more dependable listening.
